Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Roorkee) is seventh Indian Institute of Technology, was established by James Thomason as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1847. In 1949, It became a university and was remained the University of Roorkee till 2001. It was converted into IIT in 2001 by an act of Government of India and an ordinance is now converted into the act by parliament to make IIT, Roorkee an Institution of National Importance. It has 21 academic departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities & social sciences academic centers, 3 centers of excellence and some supporting units. The Institute offers various UG, PG, Integrated and Ph.D. Courses in Engineering, Management, Science, and Architecture. IIT Roorkee Admission for all courses is based on National Entrance exams such as JEE Advanced, GATE, IIT JAM or NATA.

The Institute offers Bachelor’s Degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate’s Degree in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture, and planning. The institute admits students to B.Tech., and integrated M.Tech./M.Sc. courses through the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced), to B.Arch. through NATA, to PG programs in Engineering and Architecture on the basis of GATE score, a written test, and interview, to PG programs in fundamental sciences on the basis of Joint Admission Test (IIT JAM) and to MBA program through Common Admission Test (CAT).

IIT Roorkee Facilities
Library: Library is named Mahatma Gandhi Central Library. It has a collection of more than 3,50,000 documents in all media. The library building is Wi-Fi empowered with 75 terminals for browsing through online books and journals. It can accommodate more than 500 readers at a time.
Hostel: The campus has 19 hostels of which 10 are boys’ hostel, three girls’ hostel and 6 hostels for married people. Each hostel has a state of art Cyber Cafe, managed by students and all hostels are now fully Wifi connected
