UNNATI (Unispace Nanosatellite Assembly & Training by ISRO)

India announced a capacity building programme UNNATI (UNispace Nanosatellite Assembly & Training by ISRO) on Nanosatellites development through a combination of theoretical coursework and hands-on training on Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) in June 2018  to celebrate the 50th anniversary  of the first United nation conference UNISPACE+50. U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) being the lead centre of ISRO for satellite building has designed the basic structure of this programme with equal emphasis on theoretical and practical exposure. The primary objective of the programme is to provide theoretical course on Satellite technology, comprehensive course on Nanosatellite realizationand hands-on training to assemble, integrate and test a low cost, modular Nanosatellite. The programme is scheduled to be conducted in three batches.

UNNATI (UNispace Nanosatellite Assembly & Training by ISRO)

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was established in August 1969. The Government of India constituted the Space Commission and established the Department of Space (DOS) in June 1972 and brought ISRO under DOS in September 1972. ISRO, under DOS, executes space program through its establishments located at different places in India. The prime objective of ISRO is to develop space technology and its applications for societal benefits. ISRO has been an active member of UNOOSA since its inception.

Towards the UNISPACE initiative, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is working on a system of “UN led international constellation of satellites” for Disaster risk reduction, GNSS, Telecommunication and other initiatives focused at developing countries. UNOOSA (www.unoosa.org) is making efforts to offer developing countries a simplified and increased access to satellite technologies as part of the UNISPACE initiative.

During the “54th session of Scientific & Technical Sub Committee of COPUOS (United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space)” at Vienna in February 2017, UNOOSA requested member states to propose new initiatives for UNISPACE. India suggested for conducting a capacity building programme on small satellites realisation through a combination of theoretical coursework and hands on training on Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT). UNOOSA welcomed this concept and proposed to work jointly with India to make this programme a deliverable for UNISPACE+50 conference.

As part of this initiative, U. R. Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) being the ISRO’s lead centre for satellite building, had formulated the basic structure of UNNATI (UNISPACE NANO SATELLITE ASSEMBLY & TRAINING BY ISRO)programme. The first batch of UNNATI training programme was successfully organised during January 15 to March 15, 2019 at URSC, Bangalore. The programme was inaugurated by Dr Jitendra Singh, Honorable Minister of State(Space) at URSC, Bengaluru. Dr K.Sivan, Chairman, ISRO/Secretary, DOS, Shri P Kunhikrishnan,Director, URSC,Shri Indra Mani Pandey,Additional Secretary, D&ISA, MEA and Shri PJVKS Prakasha Rao, Chairman, Organising Committee were present during the Inaugural function. The Course proceedings in the form of Booklet and CD were released during the programme. The first batch included 30 participants from 17 countries.
